Maybe it’s that WYSO is a legacy college station—who doesn’t love a college station? Or, that they renovated an old schoolhouse, which lends a certain local radio charm to the project. Certainly, the fact that famous comedian Dave Chappelle purchased the building and backed the building’s renovation was a nice touch. We appreciate that WYSO is the sole NPR news affiliate serving the Miami Valley, and that it left behind older studios where it had been broadcasting since 1968 and moved into a three-story facility with the best we have to offer. And we most definitely appreciate everything that goes into an operation that carries all the flagship NPR news programs, does a lot of production for local news and public affairs, and produces 15 unique music programs featuring hand-selected music from songwriters and bands that reach across genres.

There’s a lot of heart in that, a community investing in new studios after so much public funding has been cut from broadcasting in recent times.

Of course, it helped that we got to partner with RadioDNA and SCMS, two top pros in the studio making business, and that we got to bring out some of our best gear: LXE consoles, talent stations, and all the myriad details for integrating into the Enco automation system for a really pro setup. We poured our heart into WYSO’s two new on-air studios, production studio, event space with stage and four edit booths, all connected by our WheatNet IP audio network.

All of the above certainly added to the significance of the project, but what makes it truly memorable is how WYSO is using technology old and new. You’ll see what we mean as you watch this reel by RadioDNA recorded on WYSO’s Cutover Day in March. Notice the Cisco switches, the IP consoles, the blinky lights on those Blades… and the Technics turntable and the Tascam cassette player! Just look at the smiling faces of all those radio lovers. This is why we do what we do.
