VOICE OF A GENERATION

For those of you who got in trouble for talking in class—and we’re talking to you, dear broadcaster—there is a class designed specifically for you at Kent County High School.

We’re referring to the school’s FM station broadcasting on 90.5, of course, which is operating from an impressive studio facility that includes WheatNet IP audio networking with IP-12 and IP-16 console surfaces and integrated WideOrbit automation. WKHS has been on the air for 50 years broadcasting high school sports, local happenings, and music from the campus of the Kent County, Maryland, high school. It is almost entirely student-run, many of whom graduate with an SBE Certified Radio Operator certification.

The facility was renovated in 2018 to include an IP-12 console surface in the newsroom, an IP-16 console surface in the air studio, and ReMIX app for remote broadcasts, all networked through WheatNet IP and remotely commissioned by our tech support team. The school station has been a Wheatstone shop since 1996 and replaced Audioarts R60 consoles with the new WheatNet IP console surfaces; an Audioarts Air-4 analog console remains in operation in its main production studio. The studios are now in use daily by dozens of youth who go on to careers in the entertainment fields.

According to a recent article by Radio World, there are 200 stations licensed to high schools in the U.S., and only half of those are almost entirely student-operated, like WKHS. For more details on WHKS, read This High School Takes Radio Seriously in the Radio World January 1, 2025 issue.
